The Wise Well Woman's Way

Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award

Once again, I’ve been honored, with delight, to be recognized for my work in the blogosphere.  Today’s recognition – The Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award — is passed along to me by Dr. Erica Goodstone.  Thank you, Erica.

So, I’ll begin with a special “thank you” shout-out to Dr. Erica, who blogs over at http://www.drericawellness.com/ and http://createhealingandlovenow.com/blog/.

I have the pleasure of connecting with Dr. Erica in person every now and then, too, and I am truly enjoying getting to know her.

I encourage you to reach out and add her to your sisterhood, too.

Next, the fun really begins with the requirement that I share seven random things about myself with you.

So, here it goes…

Seven random things about me, Nanette Saylor… blogger, writer, educator, coach, trainer, mom, daughter, sister, lover, friend, partner, creative and social entrepreneur:

1. As I started this list, the first things that came to mind were mostly items I’d already included over on my post for the Kreativ Bloggers award back in 2010. I considered not including them again, but some are still so core to my being I had to make mention of them. I still want to be reincarnated as Diana Ross, I believe even more now that Johnny Depp is a GOD, and thank you, thank you, thank you, to the clothing designer that brought back the hippie peasant style now known as “BOHO”, because I will always be a flower child at heart!

2. From my HS years, I remain most proud to have been recognized with the Lee Stapleton Award.  Named for our beloved Director who died during our school years, this award was given to the HS Senior from the Drama Club who demonstrated the following qualities: “A student of the humanities with an interest in drama. One who is people-oriented, supportive of others and who shows gentility of character. A student with a Chaucerian sense of humor, a board in the acceptance of humanity. Finally, a student whose artistic interests are balanced by an interest in contemporary affairs.”

I remember, I had to look up “Chaucerian sense of humor” back then, and I had to look it up again now. I found it to be the description of a social or political satirist who blends criticism with humor in order to bring attention to shortcomings or problems.  A satirest uses humor to highlight these problems with the hope that they will be improved upon. I am certain I had no conscious awareness of the sophistication of my style or sense of humor at the time. I’m not sure I understand it even now.

What I do know is that I still cherish the 4″ thick complete, illustrated Shakespeare edition I received with a hand-drawn and painted placard affixed to the inside front cover that reads:

“The pleasure which we of the theatre field strive to bring to men is essentially that intellectual delight in the beauty of human life in action, human life as it mirrors or distorts the beauty of God, “beauty’s self and beauty’s giver”.  Theatre, like all art, is the effort of the human mind and heart to brush away transcience and grasp universal values, or … “to open a window on the infinite.” — Lee Stapleton

Today I continue to be inspired by his wisdom and his words. Who knew then that I’d be calling myself a “possibility partner” and conversing about “infinite possibilities” as a Creativity Coach more than 30 years later.

3. I made my first dress using a sewing machine when I was in the third grade. Mom did have to help with the zipper, I recall, since it also had a fitted bodice. But I do remember wearing it and it actually turned out pretty well, even if it was green cotton. Thinking about it now, I’m sorry I don’t have a photo.

4. I have to admit I miss snow skiing with regularity. I only ski a couple days per year now, after living nearly 30 years in South Florida, and I missed skiing this year altogether. There is nothing that confirms my sense of being alive and “free” more than speeding down the hill in a rhythmic pattern, gliding to the inner song of pure energetic flow, cool air brushing my face. So today I’ll set my intention to ski next year, no matter what.

5. I love to create — anything and everything–  and most things that are not conventional. I prefer to work without a plan or pattern and love to use ingredients or materials that are unconventional, too. And the thing that gives me the most pleasure, is when I am challenged to create something in a rush, with whatever materials are available.

Here’s one of my favorite examples: When my family needed a sign to attach to our old canoe float for a summer boat parade, I created this sign in about 20 minutes.

Made from foam-based paperboard left over from ???, black electrical tape to create the letters, some old paint brushed on to create the wood-like feel, with a few pine needles and pine cones secured with Elmer’s glue to finish the look, this sign continues to hang in the living room of our Adirondack camp, now 4 years later.

Fun, isn’t it?

6. Someday I hope to have a living and working space where all the projects are finished. Enough said. This sounds like another intention worth setting with conviction:   “I will have a living and working space where all the projects are finished!”

7. The greatest life lesson I’ve learned to date is simply that life isn’t about doing more than everyone else, it’s about being more true to yourself.

Just BE.

Life has an ebb and flow that is not mine to control.

Some things are not made to be “figured out”, no matter how smart you are.

When I learned to let go life got so much easier.

Now you know seven things about me you may not have known before.

What seven things might you write about yourself? Give it a try in the comment section below if you’d like. I’d love to learn more about you, too!

  1. Nanette,

I loved learning more about you. I haven’t skied in years and I forgot how much I loved that feeling of freedom going down the hill, unless it was icy and too steep and I tumbled down. Have you continued sewing? I remember taking woodworking in school but not sewing. I took a sewing course when I was a Professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology but I had difficult threading the machine and could not even complete my apron – the first assignment. You seem to have won lots of awards – good for you. You certainly have a creative flair. Fun to get to know you.

I love your selection of Blogger awards, some of my favorite people – Nancy Matthews, Trish Carr, Dr. Elinor Robin, Megha Rodriguez. I will have to check out the blogs of the others too.

    Warmly,

    Dr. Erica

    1. Thank you, again, Erica, for this special recognition. I have grown to enjoy writing out these lists of “things I love” or “things you don’t know about me”. It makes for a great journaling exercise, too. And of course, it’s all part of our self-discovery journey.
To answer your question, yes, I do sew every now and then. Honestly, I’d love to sew more. It’s on my “to-do” list for the year. I have a couple of visions in my head of things to upcycle that I’m excited to try.
      enJOY!

  2. Nanette – thank you for the recognition and for the inspiration 🙂 I loved your share about yourself and it is inspiring because you do so well at the expression of you and you remind me to take pause and pay attention to some of the same passions that we share…passions that in many cases I forget.

I was on a path to pursue a degree in Shakespearean Literature on one of my last circuits through college. Thanks for reminding me of Shakespeare 🙂 I haven’t thought much about him as I have been living in my own play for so long.

Congratulations on the sewing venture in 3rd grade! I learned to sew very young as well…although the last thing that I sewed was a set of tab curtains – it didn’t leave much for following the curves. However, having to make a straight line can sometimes be even harder!

Thank you for the gift you give of musing people’s spirit so that they can shine through in what they do and how they express themselves. Looking forward to reading more inspiration from you.

    Cheers!
    Megha

    1. Megha –

I wasn’t always so comfortable with “taking pause”. In fact, I was once a self-confessed stress junkie, so I am always pleased to hear that I am inspiring other women like you to stop for a moment and consider your passions.

I hope you’ll remember to enjoy the play your are living, and occasionally, revisit some Shakespearean Literature for fun and share your favorites with us, too.

      Wishing you well–
      Nanette
